What is Hijama Cupping Therapy
Hijama therapy is also known as wet cupping, which is a minor surgical procedure. It is used to remove harmful toxic elements from your body to improve the blood circulation. Muslims widely practise it. However, recent days non-Muslims also taking the cupping therapy.

It is a safe, non operative, non-invasive and economic way to create a therapeutic trauma accompanied by a controlled cutaneous inflammation via means of scarification. Blood and lymph, among other fluids, are drawn via means of vacuum from superficial skin scratches. The body automatically activates its natural defense mechanism called Hemostasis, which stops the bleeding.

Hijama is performed using single use disposable cups and a single-use sterile surgical blade. The incisions made are shallow, superficial, and non-invasive. They look more like a scratch or a paper cut.
The negative pressure of Hijama ruptures weak capillaries that have lost elasticity and
deteriorated, in cases beyond repair. Capillary cells have the ability to regenerate from pre-existing blood vessels; this process is called angiogenesis. Angiogenesis occurs to heal the body, and restore blood flow to affected tissues. Endothelial cell are designed to mend or create a new capillaries. The reactivated endothelial cells produce enzymes and growth factors that triggers the healthy multiplication of more endothelial cells and release them into the surrounding tissue. The result is newly formed capillaries, an increase in the vascular network.

The negative pressure under the cup has up to a 4-inch effect on deep tissues which stimulates the body to remove toxic or unhealthy fluids as they trickle out in the cup and cleanse the targeted area of restriction. Any Hijama treatment plan will typically include the upper back, around (T3
& T4), Rhomboids and Trapezius muscles. Due to the anatomical nature of these areas, they tend trap more toxins and debris than anywhere else on the body.

Before the beginning of the Hijama session, we check vitals and then sanitise the skin.
We start by applying cups according to predetermined mapped out plan. The strength of suction is applied at one of the following 3 levels 1- Stimulation Strength, 2- Tonifying Strength, 3- Drainage (Detox) Strength.
During Hijama shallow, superficial incisions are made on the skin that was being dry cupped to draw fluids out.

Hijama versus dry cupping: Hijama is clinically superior to dry cupping as it removes Causative Pathological Substances, PS, in order to restore healthy physiology, while dry cupping therapy depends on dilution and redistribution of PS to new sites.
Efficacy of Hijama is dependent on factors that include identifying: When to do Hijama, Where to place the cups, Order of the cups, Strength of the negative pressure (Suction), Duration of negative pressure. Style of incisions, Number of sessions. etc.

History of Hijama Treatment
Hijama is an Arabic word. It is an ancient and holistic practice to treat various diseases. However, the exact origin of Hijama therapy is unknown, and it is a matter of controversy. Cupping therapy is documented in Chinese and ancient Egyptian medical practices.
It is assumed that cupping had started over 5000 years ago, which has developed over time. It is believed that animal horns were used to suck out the blood and drain the toxins. Then, over the years the horn was evolved into bamboo cups and eventually replaced by glass.

How does Hijama works?
Hijama follows some process. Firstly, the practitioner places the cup through acupuncture, according to the pain points on the body. Then, cups are applied through the suction of a hose or even glass. However, glass cups are applied in a traditional way, which uses an open flame. The flame heats the inner part of the cup. After that, flames are removed quickly, and glass stuck on the skin. Then, let the cup sit on the skin for the five to ten minutes, sometimes 10-15 minutes.

Cupping Therapy at a Glance
Usually, the cupping treatment involves a negative pressure on warming and suction being applied through a cup. It creates a vacuum to draw up toxins from the surface of the skins, which increases the blood flow. The cups are usually placed on neck, shoulders, back or the body part where pain occurs. There are different types of cupping available with various types of cups.

Types of cupping
2 types of basic cuppings are available Dry cupping and Wet cupping. However, there are some other types too, Moving Cupping and Air Cupping.
Dry cupping
It doesn’t suck out the blood, while wet one is done with the bloodletting. In dry cupping process, the practitioner soaks a cotton ball in alcohol and lights it up. After that, it is placed inside the cup to remove available oxygen. Next, the cup is applied to the body. Since the oxygen was removed, the cup sits on the skin and attached.
Wet Cupping
This type of cupping sucks out a small amount of blood through a puncture. The punctured skin let the toxins to leave the body.
Moving Cupping
Another type of cupping is available, which is named as moving cupping. Unlike the basic cuppings, this one can be moved while placed on the body.
Air Cupping
It is considered as alternatives to fire cupping. In this process, a handheld suction is used to take out all the air from the cups, which creates the vacuum without heating. Air cupping is a new practice. Chinese researchers suggest that this cupping technology is innovative and more comfortable for the patients.

How long will my session last?
With dry cupping, the cup is kept in place for a set time, usually between 5 and 10 minutes.
With wet/bleeding cupping, the practitioner makes a small incision to draw blood before intentionally pulling stagnant blood out of the incision with the suction of the cup.

Running cupping usually involves the application of oil before the use of suction. Then the cups are slowly moved around the area, creating a massage-like effect. Depending on the kind of service you’re receiving, your session could last anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour or more.

When it comes to flash cupping, the cups are quickly suctioned and then released, usually in the same generalised area of the body. This is usually a 5 to 10 minute process as well.

How long will it take for cupping marks to disappear?
Any discolouration or marks from cupping usually go away within 7 days of the session
