What is Reiki
“Reiki” (ray-key) is Japanese for ‘universal life energy, and is also a word used to describe a system of natural healing, This tradition was founded by Mikao Usui in the early 20th century and evolved as a result of his research, experience and dedication.
We live in a world of energy that nourishes and maintains all living things. When this energy flows uninterrupted there is balance and harmony within and around us, and we experience a sense of well-being.
There are many variations of Reiki, but in essence, Reiki treatments can help the body emotionally or spiritually. It is a tradition that is open to any belief system.
Reiki treatment is a process that anyone can enjoy in the normal course of their life. Reiki can be used alongside other conventional or complementary treatments and often helps to provide emotional support during recovery.
The practice is taught by Reiki masters/teachers who have trained in the tradition passed on in person from master to student.
According to the University of Minnesota, patients who have undergone a Reiki session may say:
-
"I feel very refreshed and seem to be thinking more clearly."
-
"I think I fell asleep."
-
"I can't believe how hot your hands got!"
-
"I feel more relaxed than even after a massage."
-
"My headache is gone."
How Does Reiki Work?
At its core, Reiki is based on the belief that there is a universal life energy that flows through all living things. The practitioner acts as a conduit for this energy, allowing it to flow into the recipient. This transfer of energy is believed to activate the natural healing processes within the body and restore physical and emotional balance.
During a Reiki session, the recipient typically lies down fully clothed. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the body, following a sequence of hand positions. The energy flows through the practitioner's hands to the recipient, promoting relaxation and a sense of well-being.
What is Reiki Good For?
-
Reiki is renowned for its holistic healing benefits, addressing various aspects of well-being. Some common benefits include.
-
Stress Reduction: Reiki promotes deep relaxation, helping to alleviate stress and tension.
-
Pain Management: It may assist in managing chronic pain conditions and promoting overall physical comfort.
-
Emotional Healing: Reiki is believed to release emotional blockages, fostering emotional healing and balance.
-
Improved Sleep: Many individuals report better sleep quality and patterns after Reiki sessions.
-
Enhanced Spiritual Connection: Some practitioners experience a heightened sense of spiritual awareness and connection.
Cancer patients who have Reiki say they feel better after. This may be because it helps them relax. Another reason, according to Cancer Research U.K. could be that the therapist spends time with them and touches them. This has a soothing effect on patients who may be overwhelmed by invasive therapy, fear, and stress.
Individuals report different experiences. Some say that the practitioner's hands become hot, others report cooling hands and some people feel pulsating waves. The most common reports are of a release of stress and deep relaxation.
Massage follows the same principles incorporated in Chinese medicine regarding Chi (energy) within the body, that energy should be flowing freely but due to an unbalance lifestyle and stress.
Chi becomes blocked or congested manifesting itself in an illness if not corrected.
The key to the success of this treatment is to ensure that the relationship client and therapist is strong and trusting.
